Fiona Howard is a clinical psychologist and professional supervisor and trainer with over 30 years experience in the mental health and tertiary education.
I am an experienced clinical psychologist, who is passionate about providing high quality therapy, supervision and training to help sustain people in their lives and work. My background in both mental health and addictions as well as tertiary education, has provided me with unique blend of skills and knowledge, focusing upon professional growth and development as well as well-being and resilience.
I specialise in providing professional supervision and consultancy as well as training in supervision, well-being and resilience. I have been providing supervision to a range of different professionals for over thirty years.
Through my experience in acute mental health and addiction services my many years as a senior tutor in the Doctoral Programme of Clinical Psychology at the University of Auckland, I have developed expertise in addictions, motivational interviewing, professional ethics, positive psychology, managing stress and wellbeing, building resilience, and supervision. I have researched and published within the field of supervision and have presented at conferences locally and internationally in the fields of supervision, resilience, positive psychology and leadership. I have been trained in, and draw from, a number of therapeutic modalities, including CBT, ACT, family systems, narrative therapy, psychodynamic and cognitive-analytic therapy (CAT).
Other roles include serving on the Board of Trustees for Higher Ground Drug Rehabilitation Trust and the Executive Committee of the NZ Psychological Society. The latter made me a Fellow in 2021, in recognition of my contributions to the profession. Most recently I was part of a group who have co-founded the Supervision Collective Aotearoa.
I have a longstanding passion for supervision, and have presented at local and international conferences and published book chapters and research articles. Over the past 25 years, I have developed and delivered training programmes in professional supervision and resilience and wellbeing to a variety of professionals across many organisations with excellent feedback.
Supervision can provide the space to intentionally reflect on one’s capabilities, maintain wellbeing and resilience to benefit oneself, one’s clients, colleagues and organisations. In this era of continuously changing and challenging contexts, supervision is so important to sustain practitioners who are in ‘people-oriented’ professions. I am committed to helping our supervisees grow and thrive.
